Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change.
A year later, Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating. The department of Higher Education and Training has revealed more than 2.8 million young people are not in school, enrolled in training programmes or employed.
Minister Blade Nzimande revealed the statistics at the launch of the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations, adding that the intake of young people into learnerships and other skills programmes must improve.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his team at the national treasury are optimistic they will defeat South Africa’s job crisis. Youth employment nose-dived by 13.6% last year, leaving almost half of young South Africans without work.
